Real Madrid hold a slender advantage after a trio of great goals from Rodrygo, Julian Alvarez and Brahim Diaz

Real Madrid will take a 2-1 lead into the the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Atletico Madrid.

Superb finishes from Rodrygo and Brahim Diaz, either side of an even better strike from Julian Alvarez, led the European champions to victory at the Bernabéu against their closest rivals.

Rodrygo needed less than four minutes to give his side an early lead, thumping past Jan Oblak with his left foot. Alvarez found an even better finish half an hour later to level the score as his curling strike kissed the post on its way past Thibaut Courtois.

As Atletico looked to be dominating the game in the second half, some Brahim magic restored the hosts’ lead. He twisted and turned before firing into the bottom corner for what turned out to be the winning goal.

The second leg will be played 15 kilometres away at the Metropolitano on Wednesday next week.

This doesn’t feel like the first leg of a tie. There are spaces and both sides have a bit of urgency about them — at least for now.

A beautiful turn takes Brahim into the box. There is also a moment where he could probably take a tumble and call for a penalty as an arm comes out. I’m glad he doesn’t, even if there is minimal reward for him staying on his feet.
