The second semi-final on Wednesday, May 28, will see West African rivals the Super Eagles of Nigeria take on the Black Stars of Ghana in a battle for regional supremacy.

Nigeria, the two-time Unity Cup winners, are expected to be favorites due to their superior FIFA ranking and recent form.

However, Ghana will be looking to replicate their previous success in London, where they secured a 4-1 victory over the Super Eagles.

“NATIONAL SECURITY OPERATIVES STOLE GHS 10K, JEWELRY IN RAID AT EX-BOG GOVERNOR’S HOME – MINORITY ALLEGES”

0

The Minority in Parliament has accused National Security operatives of stealing money and pieces of jewellery during a raid on the home of former Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor, Dr Ernest Addison.

According to the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the operatives took GH₵10,000 and jewellery belonging to Dr Addison’s wife.

Speaking at a press briefing in Parliament on Thursday, March 20, the Minority Leader condemned what he described as lawless conduct by state security forces, accusing them of targeting former government officials.

This morning, the Minority caucus is here to express its concerns about the growing lawless conduct of our National Security operatives, who have been unleashed on opponents, particularly the former NPP appointees of President Akufo-Addo. The aim is to intimidate and frustrate them,” he stated.

He recalled a similar raid on former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s home, led by one Richard Djakpa, whom he described as an NDC activist and self-proclaimed director of operations at the National Security.

The Minority leader revealed that at 5 a.m. on Wednesday, Richard Djakpa once again led a team of armed men to Dr Addison’s residence at Roman Ridge in Accra, claiming to have a warrant to search the premises.

According to Jakpa, he had a warrant to search for a vault in which he believed Dr Addison had stored cash. They overpowered the security and forced their way in. This Rambo-style approach must stop,” he said.

He described the incident as unprecedented, stating that it was the first time in Ghana’s history that a central bank governor had been subjected to such treatment.

At the end of their raid, they found nothing. Unfortunately, some GH₵10,000 that was on the governor’s bed was missing. Some of these hungry foot soldiers, parading as National Security operatives, took the opportunity to steal. The governor’s wife’s earrings and necklaces were also not found, in other words, they stole them,” he alleged.

The Minority leader also revealed that three official vehicles were seized during the operation. However, Dr Addison was later informed that the vehicles had been parked elsewhere and that his drivers could retrieve them at 4:30 p.m. following a call from Richard Djakpa.

He warned that such actions could damage Ghana’s democratic image and drive away investors.

These actions undermine democracy and weaken investor confidence. If people investing in your country see these things happening to appointees, it will lead to capital flight. Even Ghanaians will not feel safe, they will withdraw from the financial sector and stop keeping their money in the country,” he cautioned.

The Minority called on the government to put an end to what they described as acts of intimidation and terror.

We are a nation of laws. Even legitimate investigations must be done in accordance with the law. We are not against accountability, but we are against human rights abuses, lawless conduct, and security excesses. These acts belong to the past and have no place in our democracy,” he said.

He specifically called on President Mahama to leave a better legacy by bringing an end to this conduct.

“VAT among Ghana’s most stable tax sources – Presidential Advisor”

0

Presidential Advisor on the Economy, Seth Terkper, has reaffirmed the importance of Value Added Tax (VAT) as one of Ghana’s four most stable tax sources, alongside income tax, sales/service taxes, and consumption/expenditure taxes.

Presidential Advisor on the Economy, Seth Terkper, has reaffirmed the importance of Value Added Tax (VAT) as one of Ghana’s four most stable tax sources, alongside income tax, sales/service taxes, and consumption/expenditure taxes.

“I would hope that we’ll keep it stable. The beauty of VAT is that it is one of four stable tax sources for the country. Anything else is minor,” he stated.

Despite its importance, Mr Terkper noted that VAT has not significantly increased Ghana’s tax-to-GDP ratio, with its peak recorded in 2015, following a major VAT review in 2013.

That review introduced modified taxes for small businesses, replacing presumptive taxes and thresholds to simplify compliance for smaller entities.

He also called for a review of income tax thresholds, urging Parliament to be involved in an annual indexation process to prevent “pocket creep”—a situation where inflation pushes taxpayers into higher brackets, effectively reducing their disposable income.

“REHABILITATE WA-BOLE -TECHIMAN ROAD TO CURB FATALITIES, ROBBERIES- MP APPEALS PRESIDENT”

0

The National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament (MP) for Daffiame-Bussie-Issa, Dr Sebastian N. Sandaare, has appealed to President John Mahama to, as a matter of urgency, cause the immediate rehabilitation or reconstruction of the Wa-Bole-Techiman road to curb accidents, robbery and deaths along the stretch daily.

He said improving the condition of the major highway road would allow for easier movement of goods and services to markets and facilitate trade to boost economic growth in the Upper West and Savannah regions

“It will reduce vehicle wear and tear, leading to lower transportation costs for passengers, businesses and consumers while enabling faster delivery times and improved supply chains, enhancing overall productivity and by extension, attracting more businesses and investments to a region,” he said.

Statement

In a statement he read on the floor of Parliament to draw the House’s attention to the deplorable nature of the Wa-Bole-Techiman road, Dr Sandaare was optimistic that enhancing the state of the road would also help to create jobs in those regions for the unemployed youth.“It will further boost tourism and reduce the negative impact cited supra such as accidents, robbery and deaths along the road,” he said.

Dr Sandaare said one such important road network with enormous economic and social benefits to the people in the Upper West and Savannah regions and Ghana at large was the Wa-Bole-Techiman Road.

He said the road was an N12 trans-ECOWAS road that linked the Upper West and Savannah regions to the southern part of Ghana and neighbouring Burkina Faso.

He, however, said it was sad the road was very deplorable beyond description to the state that the social and economic benefits of a good road network were lost on the people.

Abandoned route

Dr Sandaare explained that a journey which would naturally take less than 12 hours from Accra to Wa took an average of 18 hours or more now.

“Worse was that transport owners including the State Transport Company had started avoiding and even abandoning the road to the detriment of communities along that stretch,” he said.

“Mr Speaker, even though the importance of keeping this road in good shape is not lost on government, the neglect of the road for close to a decade without maintenance has left the entire road network in its present deplorable state.”

“Even though chiefs, commuters, drivers and MPs from the two regions from both sides of the political divide have made several appeals to past governments to fix the road, the situation has not changed as the condition of the road continues to deteriorate each passing day,” he said.

He pointed out that although the immediate past regime announced the award of a portion of the road to a contractor before it exited power, the contractor was yet to commence work on site.

“Also, the bad road network has a significant toll on the health of commuters and settlers.

The long sitting hours pose severe health challenges to the passengers. Respiratory diseases are equally rising among communities along the road due to the daily inhalation of dust,” he said.

He further explained that patient transport was equally negatively impacted with reports of deterioration of medical conditions of patients who were referred to the Upper West Regional Hospital.

“GOLDBOD TO TAKE OVER SMALL- SCALE GOLD EXPORTS- SAMMY GYAMFI EXPLAINS NEW POLICY”

0

The government has announced a policy shift that will make Goldbod the sole exporter of gold from Ghana’s small-scale mining sector, effectively barring licensed traders and bullion dealers from exporting gold directly.

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), Sammy Gyamfi disclosed the new directive in an interview on Joy FM on Thursday, March 20, 2025.Explaining the rationale behind the move, he stated that the government aims to improve foreign exchange tracking and ensure that all forex earnings from gold exports are properly accounted for.

“The licensed traders cannot export again. The bullion traders cannot export. Goldbod will be the sole exporter of all gold from the small-scale sector,” Mr Gyamfi confirmed.

Traders to buy for Goldbod

Under the new arrangement, traders will still be allowed to operate but only as aggregators or licensed buyers, meaning they can purchase gold but must operate under Goldbod’s buying policy. However, they will no longer be able to export gold independently.

Additionally, exporters with international buyers will be required to channel payments through Goldbod, which will receive the foreign currency, convert it into cedis for the traders, and then handle the exports on their behalf.

Concerns over past policies

Mr Gyamfi noted that the new system seeks to correct problems caused by previous government policies.

He recalled that in November 2022, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government suspended all export licences, making the Bank of Ghana and PMMC the sole exporters of small-scale gold.

“That decision was taken unilaterally without legal backing under the pretext of implementing the ‘Gold for Oil’ policy,” he stated.

He further alleged that while export licences were suspended, the then Minister of Lands and Natural Resources selectively granted exemptions to certain exporters, creating an unfair system that benefited only a few.

“Instead of applying the rule fairly, the then Minister of Lands and Natural Resources granted exemptions to some exporters. This created an unfair system that favoured a few,” he added.

Government aims to boost forex repatriation

A key reason for the policy change, according to Mr Gyamfi, is to address forex retention challenges in Ghana’s gold sector.

He argued that under the previous system, traders often failed to return foreign currency earned from gold sales, which affected Ghana’s forex reserves.

“The reason why we need this change is so that we can track the forex and bring it back. We entrusted traders with this responsibility, but we had issues with forex retention and repatriation,” he explained.

By centralising gold exports, the government believes it will tighten control over forex inflows, which it argues will benefit the economy.

“LAND MINISTER REVOKES ALL SMALL-SCALE MININIG LICENSES ISSUED POST DECEMBER 7,2024”

0

It seems that the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, is taking significant action to address concerns surrounding small-scale mining in Ghana. By revoking all licenses granted after December 7, 2024, he is signaling that the government is prioritizing due process and regulatory standards in the mining sector.

The revocation of licenses without proper procedure, along with the introduction of stricter measures on mining equipment and the disbanding of the existing community mining scheme, indicates a more robust effort to curb illegal mining activities. Transitioning to small-scale mining cooperatives also seems aimed at ensuring that mining activities are more community-oriented and beneficial to local populations.

What do you think about these measures? Do you believe this will effectively tackle illegal mining in the region?

“WHY I DIDN’T RESIGN AS GENDER MINISTER DESPITE PROLONGED ABSENCE – ADWOA SAFO”

0

Former Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has defended her prolonged absence from duty, stating that she remained in office based on advice from a senior member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Adwoa Safo revealed that the NPP stalwart, whom she did not name, encouraged her to stay on despite public criticism, assuring her that the appointing authority and all relevant stakeholders were aware of her situation.

“The state wasn’t suffering because all the authorities that needed to know what was happening were aware. A leading member of the NPP also advised me not to resign because of the numerous speculations surrounding my absence,” she stated.

She dismissed claims that she was deliberately avoiding duty, citing the fact that Cecilia Dapaah acted as caretaker minister during her absence.

“Cecilia Dapaah was caretaker for a year, so if anybody thinks I was pretending, why would they have tolerated me for that long? I came to Ghana whenever necessary, but people didn’t know and were fabricating lies. I was just wondering who was paying people to do that,” she said.

Former President Nana Akufo-Addo revoked Adwoa Safo’s appointment on July 28, 2022, after she had been outside the country for nearly a year.

Her prolonged absence also sparked calls for her Dome-Kwabenya parliamentary seat to be declared vacant.

She further clarified that during her absence, she did not receive any salary or allowance since there was a caretaker minister in place.

2025 BUDGET: GH¢ 1.5BN ALLOCATION FOR AGRIC HIGHLY INSUFFICIENTLY – AGRIC IMPACT CEO

0

The Chief Executive Officer of Agri-Impact Limited, Mr. Daniel Fahene Acquaye, has raised concerns over the budgetary allocation to the agricultural sector in the 2025 national budget saying it is very insufficient.

Speaking at the 2025 Budget Digest organized by PwC in Accra, he complained that the current allocation is inadequate to drive the economic transformation envisioned by the government.

Mr. Acquaye highlighted that out of the total GH¢279 billion budget, only GH¢1.5 billion—representing 0.54%—has been allocated to agriculture.

In 2024, agriculture was allocated 2.2% of the total budget.

“The point I’m making is that the budget allocation to agriculture in this year’s budget is highly insufficient. If we see a decline in the government’s own budget allocation to agriculture—not donor funds—then we are definitely going to face challenges,” he stated.

While acknowledging the government’s introduction of the GH¢13.8 billion Big Push initiative, Mr. Acquaye questioned the absence of a detailed breakdown of allocations within the initiative.

He called for a dedicated “Big Push for Agriculture,” focusing on critical areas such as irrigation, post-harvest systems, and large-scale agricultural infrastructure.

He further emphasized the need for investment in agricultural infrastructure, arguing that institutions like the Ghana Exim Bank, GIRSAL, and the Development Bank of Ghana are supporting agribusiness but are not addressing large-scale transformative infrastructure such as irrigation systems, warehouses, and road networks.

“We have sector-specific funds like GETFund for education and COCOBOD for cocoa, but there is no dedicated fund for agriculture,” he noted.

Touching on climate change, Mr. Acquaye highlighted the vulnerability of northern Ghana, where farmers rely on a single production season. He warned that delayed rainfall in 2023 led to crop losses exceeding 90% in some areas, leaving many farmers unable to replant until the following year.

He also underscored the need for “agri-enablers” to attract young people into the sector. While Ghana has implemented policies such as free tuition for first-year tertiary students, he stressed that there must be corresponding investments in creating opportunities for skilled graduates in agriculture.

Mr. Acquaye concluded by urging the government to reconsider its budget priorities, emphasizing that without significant investment in agricultural infrastructure and enablers, the country’s economic transformation would be incomplete.
