The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has declared an indefinite strike effective Monday, August 10, 2026.
The association, which represents non-teaching staff of the university, is protesting what it describes as disparities in allowances and poor working conditions.
According to the Secretary of GAUA, Phanuel Seli Kwadzo Asense, the allowances paid to the highest-ranked non-teaching staff member are nearly 50 per cent lower than those received by the lowest-ranked teaching staff member.
He said the disparity is affecting the welfare of administrators and their ability to effectively deliver services on campus.
“If you pick the least teaching staff member, the allowance offered to them compared to the highest non-teaching staff member, there is a disparity of not less than 50%,” he said.
The industrial action was declared following an emergency meeting at which the leadership and members of the association deliberated on the issue and reached a collective decision.
The strike is expected to affect service delivery at various administrative offices of the university as members withdraw their services.
Mr Asense said several months of negotiations and correspondence with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and other government stakeholders had failed to resolve their grievances.
He said the association would not call off the strike until its demands were addressed.
“If government is a listening one and would have our concerns addressed, we will consider coming back. We are not fighting the university or the teaching staff,” he said.
A monitoring team is expected to be deployed in the coming days to track members who may defy the industrial action.
